We all learn a bunch of stuff during events by listening to talks and panels but we rarely get the chance to put it into practice. So, for this edition, we’re embracing the learn by doing motto.
No boundaries. That’s the spirit of #LIS15. That’s why we selected a extravagant venue, the Pombal Palace, one of the most historical palaces in the city of Lisbon. Walk around, explore the different rooms and let the magic happen.
We set exclusive workshops in parallel to what is happening on the main stage. Get the best growth hacking tips, learn how to develop your skills in a startup, figure out how lean innovation methods can help your business and discover the future of startup acceleration. Sounds interesting enough? Register here.
Note: The workshops are part of #LIS15, you need to get your event ticket first.
Revisit your business approach with the top-notch experts
Grab the opportunity to experiment new tools with hands-on workshops. Patrick Valskovits – the famous author of The Lean Entrepreneur and mentor at 500 startups – will deliver an exclusive workshop on growth hacking for all the life hackers present at #LIS15. On Friday, our own Manuel Tanger will offer his lean innovation workshop. You can already get a sneak peek of it here.
Learn how Europe is becoming an entrepreneurial playground
On top of that, a wide range of topics will be covered by exclusive talks and panels. How the perception of failure could have an impact on the success of your startup? How the harmonization of the European market is changing the startup game? How to accelerate startups embracing Europe as a main asset? How to include universities in the entrepreneurial ecosystem? How to teach the right skills to students in order to turn them into entrepreneurs? Have a look at our awesome speakers and secure your seat.
Get your ticket for #LIS15 and register now for the workshops. Only a few tickets are available for these exclusive sessions taking place in an intimate room of an old palace. You might not get twice this opportunity to meet top-notch speakers in such an environment. See you next week!

We are less than a week away from LIS and Beta-i team is working like crazy to guarantee that this is going to be a kick ass event. Have you registered yet?
The speakers and startups line is now closed and we’ve just confirmed the participation of some more really interesting folks: Jonathan Brecker, Vice-President of e.ventures (yes, the ones who invested in Farfetch and Groupon) is arriving from the US, Carlos Silva from Seedrs – the leading equity crowdfunding platform in Europe – is joining us from London and James Laird from LifeHacker UK, representing one of the many media presences we’re having at LIS.
Everything is almost in place except the Sardines who are waiting to be fished (apologies to vegans) for the LIS amazing closing party – a Lisbon typical Arraial. We couldn’t get the all team to talk but watch some of our girls explaining you why you just can’t miss this event. Looking forward to see you there!

We’re getting closer and closer to the Lisbon Investment Summit, an event that’s all about connecting the local ecosystem with international players.
Most international startups and investors already have an idea on what the Portuguese mindset is all about. But how do they specifically see the startup mindset in this little corner-country of Europe?
Ship wrote an interesting article on this back in February:
The Portuguese ecosystem has been establishing itself over the last few years. Long before Lisbon became the trending tech hub, there already were many tech related companies in Porto and Coimbra, for example. As Diogo Teles, Product Lead at Faber Ventures (a Portuguese VC and Company builder) puts it: “Lisbon brought to the scene the inspiration from tech hubs such as the ones in London and Berlin. So the ecosystem, as we know it, really started with Startup Lisboa, but you already had many things going on in other cities, long before Lisbon started.” So, the media exposure regarding this new optimistic movement, that offers a contrast to the economic crisis, brought many entrepreneurs to the spotlight. Then the whole hype started and having your own business became cool, ignoring the regular working schedule was normal and forgetting about conservative hierarchies was acceptable.

So, we’ve been getting a lot of curious questions about the venue, and what’s this mystery all about.
You really want to know what’s it all about? Then prepare to take off your shoes and embrace beauty as natural as it can get.
The event is set in an amazing sixteenth century palace called Palácio de Pombal and it is located near Bairro Alto (one of the most trendiest places in Lisbon). It was the palace where the great Marquis of Pombal was born, thriving in mystery with decaying walls and breath-taking frescoes.
We chose this palace for its particular architectural layout with several rooms spread out, but also for the mood it sets, for the culture it breathes, and for its creative potential, combining tradition with modernity. Yes, we know, it’s not the typical startup and investment events venue, so if you’re looking for a fancy venue with the latest technologies, then you will have to look somewhere else, as this location will deliberately contrast what we are preaching (technological and innovative startups) with what it conveys (preservation and simplicity).
We invite you to discover what is really happening in Lisbon, by taking you out of your comfort zone, and providing you an experience you will not forget. This authentic location will connect you with the local culture of the city, with a certain level of edginess, we hope you are prepared.
It sets a new tone, and will create a narrative that will leave you intrigued, and secretly desiring for more next year!

Are you familiar with that famous saying “Show me who your friends are and I’ll tell you who you are?”. Well, it’s certainly one of the most common clichés ever but it reflects Beta-i within the context of how we choose who to hang out with. We are proud to be associated with those who are the best on promoting innovation and supporting entrepreneurship, regardless of the type of Institution (Universities, Corporate, Non-Profit, etc). IE Business School is one of the most concrete examples of how picky we are.
Nuestros hermanos just conquered number #1 position on the 2015 world wide ranking of the Economist Executive MBA’s with their Global Executive MBA program. The Spanish Business School offers an attractive array of entrepreneurship projects backed up by multicultural teams:
- IE Venture Network, the recurrent event to pitch, share and network every week;
- Pasion>ie, a joint initiative from IE with Accenture to connect the entrepreneurial community to corporate innovation. The 6 month program started in 2011 aiming to match entrepreneurs and organisations and it’s already on its 4th edition, focusing on Smart Cities, eHealth & Future and Commercial distribution sectors.
- Comprometi 2.0, initiative to develop young entrepreneurial talent through innovative and experiential methodologies, offering the winner one of their reputed Master Degrees on Entrepreneurship;
- South Summit, renowned event for entrepreneurs and international investors in Latin America and Southern Europe;
- Spain Startup co-investment Fund, a project focused on fostering international Business Angels and Venture Capital investment in Spanish startups.
Most of this events and /or programs happen in the Area 31, the IE Incubator space that accommodates up to 100 startup teams per annum. It hosts teams of IE students as they make their business ideas real in Venture Lab (IE’s Startup accelerator) or the Knowledge Incubator. There are also IE Alumni teams that are incubating their own startups in Area 31. All of them are invited to present in front of investors at the weekly pitching slam, the Venture Network, and at the grand international demo days: The Venture Days.
The first date… and how it got us here:
Venture Day Lisbon back in 2013 was Beta-i and IE Business School first date. At Epic Sana Hotel on the 25th of June, we sold out the tickets for the major Iberian investment event ever, in such a fruitful partnership that got us together ‘til today. Venture Days’ are part of IE’s internationalisation strategy as the event aims to connect the local and international startup community and to look for the hottest startups to invest in, which actually happens every year as the IE’s representative in Portugal, Inês Holterman stated on this testimonial video from last year’s edition.
Recently we’ve been associating the grande finale of both accelerators – Lisbon Challenge and Venture Lab – on a single event – LISbon Investment Summit – that represents the best is done yearly within the European entrepreneurship scene. If the benefits are not obvious, we can mention some: increasing the investment possibilities, broadening the market access, promoting even more sharing practises and further networking chances and on, and on and on.
Hands-on approach
Other than this huge event, both organisations aim to help students, young people in general, entrepreneurs, intrapreneurs, and all kind of individuals to progress with an innovative mindset and a proactive attitude. Even if you don’t have the most advanced and attractive startup in the world, there are loads of events you can attend to improve your skills and accelerate your business idea.

IE Business School organises several workshops but, if you want to get your hands dirty straight away and have the real feeling of the startup-building carrousel, apply for the most amazing 3 weeks you can experience during the IE Summer School! Not only you’ll get to know the vibrant city of Madrid and practise your Spanish, but you’ll also learn a hell of a lot about entrepreneurship related subjects such as design thinking, big data or business finance and you’ll be able to specialise in one of these 3 areas: International Relations, International Business Law or Entrepreneurship.
