Nextlap finds new business opportunities and innovative products using end-of-life tires and their components.

Of the 30 million tons of tyres discarded globally every year, only 25% are recycled. With Nextlap this waste fuels business growth by connecting innovative startups, academia, and large companies committed to sustainability in sectors such as retail, automobile, infrastructure, construction, and textile.

The resultant collaborations of NextLap have been accelerating the development of new technologies and innovative products using end-of-life tyres and their components – rubber, steel and textile.

The Impact

Exploring New Products with Revolutionary Technology

Researchers at the University of Coimbra developed rubber-silica aerogel panels for thermal superinsulation in buildings. In the process, they pioneered a unique technique to transform rubber into a liquid. Decathlon collaborated with the university to explore the development of sustainable sports equipment, with high grip and impermeability, improving thermal insulation, safety, and protection.

Decreasing Carbon Footprint in Construction

The collaboration between Genan, Farcimar, and Infraestruturas de Portugal has pioneered the integration of end-of-life tires (ELT) into precast concrete products, decreasing CO2 emissions, the resource intensity of concrete, and the pollution caused by ELT waste. By infusing rubber granules into precast concrete, Farcimar has created a sustainable, high-performing acoustic barrier, first installed on a railway in Portugal. This solution recycled around 28 tons of rubber agglomerate, equivalent to redeeming over ten end-of-life tires per square meter of the acoustic barrier.
